Hughes, Birtwistle lead Chester-le-Street into Royal London quarter-finals

Chester-le-Street moved into the quarter-finals of the Royal London Club Championship with a five-wicket victory against Leyland yesterday.

Graeme Cessford’s superb haul of 5-22 helped Chester dismiss Leyland for 187, despite Nathan McDonnell’s 91-ball 105. Mark Turner grabbed 3-55.

In reply, Chester were led home by Quentin Hughes (70 not out) and Simon Birtwisle (68), finishing on 189-5 in 42.5 overs.
