Durham secured their first win in the Women’s County Championship with a three-wicket victory over Cumbria in Division Three Group A.

Cumbria were bowled out for 173 at Penrith, as Bailey Wanless took 3-42, backed by Helen Fenby (2-18), Hayley Falls (2-43), Laura Ellison (2-8) and Jenny McDowell (1-16). Elizabeth Priddle fired nine boundaries in 54.

Durham lost seven wickets in sealing victory, with just 19 balls to spare, led by Rachel Hopkins (34, with four fours and a six).

Ami Campbell and Laura Ellison added 21 apiece, while Layla Tipton scored 19 and Fall 17 not out.

That success came a day after the season started with an eight-wicket defeat to Scotland at Philadelphia.

Becky Glen’s unbeaten 54 led Durham to 165-4 in 50 overs, with Ellison unbeaten on 25.

Openers Elise Good and Laura Hockaday both made 24.

Scotland put on 129 for the first wicket, easing to victory in the 34th over, with just two wickets down, both captured by Falla (2-42). Sarah Bryce was unbeaten on 81, while Lorna Jack made 50.

Durham Women are quickly back in action tomorrow, when they host old rivals Northumberland.

The match is scheduled for an 11am start at Philadelphia’s Bunker Hill ground.
