All go for new era in cricket

Have your say

A BRAVE new dawn beckons the North East’s club cricketers when the 2013 season gets under way in two months’ time.

The North East Premier League has expanded, featuring 10 teams – Boldon, Brandon, Eppleton, Felling, Sacriston, Seaham Harbour, South Hetton, Washington, Whitburn and Willington – in a Second Division.

The remaining 25 clubs from the old Senior, County and Coast Leagues, together with former North East Durham League side Whiteleas, have joined forces to form the new Durham Cricket League (DCL).

The 26 clubs in the new DCL, which will be sponsored by Readers, will sort out the longer term pecking order by playing each other once.

At the end of the season, the league will split into two divisions.

The top 14 will form Division One, with the bottom 12 in Division Two.

Then, at the end of the 2014 summer, the aim is that the top two teams in DCL 1 will be promoted to NEPL 2 – although that will be subject to meeting their criteria.
