SUNDERLAND ABC boxers Jack Storey and Isaac Macleod will compete in Junior ABA finals this weekend hoping to bring national titles back to the city.
Jack Storey, 16, fighting in Class 4, 80-85kg class, stopped Toby Senior of Leigh ABC in the first round of the quarter-finals and immediately got a bye to the finals, as there were no other competitors in his weight from the region.
He now meets two-time champion Billy Lea of Pinewood Star in what will be the 6ft 4ins Wearsider’s first national final.
He will be joined in the finals at Mansfield Civic Centre in Chesterfield by more experienced club team-mate Macleod, 18, who will competing in Class 6, 63.4-67kg hoping to win his TENTH national title.
In the semi-finals in Birmingham, Isaac took on the awkward and tall Amir Fiaz of Wellington BA, who was eventually disqualfied for unsporting behaviour for holding and pushing.
Sunderland starlet Macleod has won titles at schoolboy level and also won a gold medal in the European Championships as well as silver in the Youth World Championships.
He takes on the very talented Jordan Reynolds of West Ham ABC.
Kieron McDonald of Sunderland ABC was unlucky in the semi-finals as was Errol Freeman of Lambton Street ABC.
Washington’s Luke and Pat McCormack, who box out of Birtley ABC also reached the finals, as did Callum French of Birtley.
H Sunderland ABC have four schoolboys competing in the Dublin Boxing Cup in Dublin in July – Joel Hassan, John Purdy, Carlo Geraldi and Jamie Cockburn will all be representing the city over three days of contests held between July 5-7.
