Luke McCormack made smooth progress in the European Games in Baku this morning.

The Washington boxer dominated throughout as he claimed a 3-0 win against Greek Panagiotis Matsagkos in the last 32 of the lightweight (60k) category.

The 20-year-old Birtley ABC man is in his first senior international tournament but won every round 10-9 on each of the three judges’ scorecards.

Luke will fight Frenchman Sofiane Oumiha in the last 16 on Saturday afternoon.

Sunderland boxer Josh Kelly, who fights out of Houghton ABC, starts his welterweight (69kg) campaign on Sunday against Mahamed Nurudzinau of Belarus.

Hartlepool’s former World Champion Savannah Marshall kicks off her Euro campaign with a fight tomorrow against Dutch rival Nouchka Fontijn.
