Rhys Deehan just missed out on Euro glory – but there was a silver lining for the gifted teenager.

The Sunderland boxer has returned from the European Schoolboys Championships with a silver medal.

Rhys, the reigning English Schools title holder, performed superbly in Zagreb.

The 14-year-old reeled off great wins against Croatia, Denmark, Lithuania and the Czech Republic, not losing a round in the process.

Alas, he was forced to concede second best to the Russian boxer in the U40 kilos final, losing out on a points decision.

The teenager, from South Hylton, was representing Birtley ABC as well as his nation, and is the latest talent to come out of the club and hopes are high for the former Lambton Street ABC youngster.

Dad Darren said: “Rhys has had a brilliant season.

“He missed out on an international through illness but then went away with England and came back with a silver medal.

“He did not lose a round until the final and we are very proud of what he has achieved.”
