It is another major step forward for the Houghton ABC talent, who is hoping to now win a place at the OIympic Games in Rio.

Kelly has enjoyed a tumultuous 2015. Boxing in his first major international senior tournament, he beat the fighters from Belarus and Ireland to reach the U69 kilo semi-final at the European Games in Baku.

He was unlucky to lose out to Azerbaijan’s Parviz Baghirov, who was listed at number three in the world ratings.

Kelly went on to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in Doha.

The 21-year-old enjoyed unanimous points wins over Australia’s Nathan Webb er and New Zealand’s before encountering world number two Mohammed Rabii.

Unfortunately, the Moroccan took victory but there was much for Kelly to take satisfaction from.

There are three remaining Olympic qualification events, all next year. They are in Istanbul (April 20 to May 1), Sofia (May 13-22) and Baku (June 7-19).
