SUNDERLAND ABC’s Jake Bonallie won his Tyne, Tees and Wear championship belt outright after a thrilling fight with Michael Laws on Plains Farm ABC’s show.

Laws, a veteran of 40 fights, was returning after a 15-month break and was put under immediate pressure, Bonallie throwing big shots to the body.

Laws used the ring well, though, throwing some lovely hooks and uppercuts. He had a good second round, using his jab well and scoring points by countering while trying to stay away from the ever-pressing Bonallie.

But, with the fight in the balance, Bonallie fired off a huge right at the start of the third round, following up with a combination to the body which seemed to sway the bout in his favour as he landed big scoring shots for the rest of the round.

Both boxers receiving rapturous applause before the judges scored the bout 26-23 in favour of Bonallie, who will now keep the belt after making three successive title defences.

The Plains Farm show had several other good contests.

Plains Farm debutant Jake Guiheen got his career off to a great start, outboxing Ryan Cartmen (Grainger Park). Guiheen demonstrated a high workrate and good counter-punching skills on his way to an 18-10 victory.

The host club’s Kevin Nelson fought an entertaining bout with South Durham’s James Archer. Nelson lost 17-7 but showed good all-round ability and held his own against the England international.

Sunderland ABC’s Jake Slater edged a 17-16 victory over Lambton Street’s Bobby Begg – the pair are now tied at one apiece and hope to settle the rivalry on Lambton Street’s show next month.
