TRAINER Mal Gates is backing Sunderland fighter to triumph on home territory at the Stadium of Light next month – despite the heartache of seeing his Northern Area title bout called off.
Mould (pictured) was due to take on Gary Fox for the Northern light-welterweight belt, but a hamstring injury has ruled the Fishburn man out of the Summer Rumble on July 13.
Mould will now take on Newcastle’s John Watson in a non-title fight at welterweight as no light-welterweights in the region were willing to take on Mould at such short notice.
Gates said: “We were all absolutely gutted when we found out.
“Lee had his heart set on winning the title. He’s not going to get a belt strapped around his waist now, but he’s still young and has only had five fights.
“This is now going to be a harder fight as he has had to step up in weight and is giving away a lot of experience and weight. It will be tough, but we’re more than capable of winning it.
“I think Lee has a bit of an edge, and he wants to win so much.
“Training couldn’t be going any better really, and this is still a big one for Lee, as he’s a Sunderland lad and it’s at the Stadium of Light.”
