BOXING twins Luke and Pat McCormack both made the podium in a warm-up tournament for August’s European Championships, writes CHRIS YOUNG.
The Washington pair, who compete for Birtley ABC, travelled to the Brandenburg Box Cup, in Germany, as part of the Great Britain team.
Both 18-year-olds came away with medals, with Luke taking gold in the bantamweight category and Pat securing bronze in the lightweight division.
After beating opposition from Italy, Sweden and Germany in the knock-out stages, Luke took on Denmark’s Frederick Jensen in the final.
Southpaw Jensen boasted a height advantage, but Luke countered his awkward opponent well, avoiding the Dane’s attempted back-hands and counter-attacking to win the first round.
Jensen enjoyed more success in the second round with some long shots, but Luke sealed gold in the final round when he changed his line of attack with a classy display.
Pat was the victim of a controversial exit after overcoming German opposition to face Russia’s Kamran Nabatiyeh in the semi-finals.
The bout started off explosively with Nabatiyeh looking for big shots, but Pat holding his own.
Pat continued with high work-rate in the second round, forcing the Russian onto the book foot and maintained that ploy in the third round.
McCormack’s camp thought he had done enough to win, but the judges scored the bout 2-1 to the Russian, sparking boos from the German crowd.
