JONSON McClumpha is ready to Rumble – and it could be for a Northern Area title.

The hot Sunderland prospect will take on Horden’s Greg O’Neil in the fourth Summer Rumble at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, July 13.

Promoter Phil Jeffries said: “I want derbies and exciting fights at the Stadium of Light, and this fits in both categories!

“I want 50-50 fights that will entertain people – I want fans to come wondering who will win, not knowing who will win.

“I love the look of McClumpha v O’Neil and I’ve proposed it for the Northern Area middleweight title.

“I’m just waiting on confirmation from the Northern Area Council of the British Boxing Board of Control.”

O’Neil will go into the derby in confident mood after a great effort in his last outing against Olympian Anthony Ogogo.

The 23-year-old was expected to be something of a lamb to the slaughter against the leading British prospect, who is part of the famed Golden Boy operation of Oscar De La Hoya

The big-hitting middleweight lost on points in Glasgow, but Ogogo knew he’d been in a fight.

McClumpha is also 23 and has an unbeaten record, his only ‘blemish’ being a draw with Andrew Buchanan in a rip-roaring Sunderland-Newcastle derby in the 2013 Summer Rumble.

The Wearsider talent, trained at the East Durham College in Peterlee by Dave Binns, has been beset by injury woes over the last two years but will see this as a possible career-changing fight.

“It’s a brilliant fight for both lads,” said Jeffries.

“But it’s an even better fight for the fans.”
