DANNY ‘Boy’ Hughes faces the biggest fight of his career – and his biggest payday – when he takes on unbeaten boxer Hughie Fury later this month.

The Sunderland heavyweight will have to earn his money though when he goes into the ring on Saturday, March 22 against rising star Fury - cousin of top heavyweight Tyson.

Fury is a man on a mission with the 6ft 6ins fighter having had 13 fights and 13 wins so far in less than a year, as he works on his ambition of beating Mike Tyson’s record of becoming the youngest world heavyweight champion at the age of 20 years and four months.

Next in line for the Manchester-based fighter is Hughes – fresh from a victory over Croatia’s Jakov Gospic in Newcastle in December – with the two fighters set to meet in an eight-rounder in Sheffield which will be televised on Channel 5.

The bout is a rescheduling of the Hughes-Fury fight originally due to take place in November, which was postponed when Fury suffered a cut in his previous fight.

Once again Hughes and his manager Phil Jeffries are happy to take the contest on, even though it means a big step up in class for the Castletown boxer.

But the big-punching Wearsider is confident he can pull off a surprise victory and Jeffries feels the same.

The Sunderland promoter told the Echo: “Danny is really up for the fight and has been badgering me to get it on.

“He really fancies it –- and I wouldn’t put him in there if I didn’t think he had a chance – he’s go the tools to do the job.

“It will be great exposure for him and it will open a lot of doors for him if he does well in it.”

* Sunderland trainer Tommy Conroy has had success with Gateshead flyweight Gary Reeve who has won his second professional fight, beating debutant James Williams in Lincoln.

The Tynesider triumphed after a stoppage from a clash of heads, making up for the disappointment of losing his first pro fight to Scottish boxer Adam MacKenzie.

Conroy said: “Gary did well. He’s a good honest lad, one of a couple I’m working with at the moment.”
