BOXING promoter Phil Jeffries says fight fans are in for a treat this weekend, predicting this year’s Summer Rumble will be as hot as the weather is expected to be on Wearside, writes Graeme Anderson.

The annual boxing extravaganza at the Stadium of Light goes ahead on Sunday afternoon and Jeffries reckons the string of regional fights will be hot stuff.

He told the Echo: “We’ve got double figures on this Sunday, in terms of the fights.

“But what interests me is how close some of these contests will be.

“We’ve got great matches lined up where it’s really hard to decide who the favourite is, going int the fights.

“It should mean some really exciting fights with no quarter asked for or given.”

Topping the bill is South Shields’ Anthony ‘Babyface’ Nelson fighting for a Northern area title but there are boxers on from all across the region and some of the best young prospects on Wearside.

Jeffries said: “There are so many good, exciting boxers coming through in the North East and we’re delighted to give them the chance to perform on home soil.

“You only have to look at the top of the bill where Nelson takes on Mohammed Wajas to see we’ve got hungry young fighters performing.

“Nelson’s from South Shields, Wajas from Middlesbrough, so it’s a completely local fight, but both are coming in it to win it.

“They’ll be giving their all because they know the winner will be on course for an English or British title shot. Nelson’s unbeaten and a very exciting boxer and I think that will be a cracker of a contest.”

Sunderland fighters on the bill are Kirk Goodings, Lee Mould and Jonson McClumpha while English bantamweight champion Martin Ward and his brother Tommy are also featuring.

Doors open tomorrow just after midday with boxing going on all afternoon.
