DURHAM are sending a team of 35 athletes to the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships at Gateshead this weekend.

The 81st championships are televised live on Sky television and start at 10am on both Friday and Saturday.

Sunderland and West Wearside each have three athletes included and Easington have two.

Michael Wilson, last year’s English Schools’ junior boys’ 800m bronze medallist, moves up to the intermediate age group, where being a first year, he will do well to get through his heats.

The St Aidan’s pupil won the county schools’ title in a personal best of 1.59.3. His event opens the championships at 10am on Friday.

Katherine Bulmer is ranked seventh in the under-20 UK shot rankings with a mark of 11.87. She finished eighth in the schools’ event at Birmingham last year.

The third Sunderland athlete is Abigail Smith, who is 37th in the under-17 UK 80m hurdles rankings with 12.26.

West Wearside are represented by intermediate boys Barry Maskell in the 1,500m, Joey Williams (400m hurdles) and Ryan King (long jump).

Easington’s Georgia Dawson (100m) and Chloe Price (800m) are entered in the intermediate girls’ category.
