BRIAN RUSHWORTH and Michelle Holt made it a golden double for Sunderland Harriers in the second annual multi-terrain Lambton Run yesterday.

The pair won the men’s and women’s titles in the wonderful grounds of the Lambton estate at Burnmoor.

Rushworth won the race, over approximately the 10k distance, in probably his slowest time ever (36.02) for the distance, to show how testing the course was.

Holt finished eighth overall in a field of nearly 200 to win the women’s race (40.21) by a street.

Rushworth was content to run with a group of five until he made his move for victory around the 3k marker. At the finish the 49-year-old was 94 seconds ahead of runner-up Peter Farnie of Birtley AC with Houghton Harrier Alan Foster well back in third.

Rushworth made it three victories out of three, since clocking the fastest lap in the North East Veterans’ Road Relay Championship and winning the Penshaw Hill race title for the 18th time 12 days ago.

He said: “I really enjoyed the race. It was a smashing course and I didn’t feel I was under any pressure. The time was of no consequence. I was just out for a good run.”

Holt was naturally delighted to finish so high-up in the race and she said: “It was a better course than last year. I felt as though I was running well and I have to be happy with my position.’’

She finished nearly six minutes ahead of the second woman Eleianne Trambath with Houghton Harriers’ veteran Kelly Bentley third (46.22)
