SUNDERLAND Harriers have been confirmed as winners of the team prize in the Great North Gateshead 10k Road Race.
The Powerade competition, based on the accumulative times of the club’s leading three men and three women, saw the Wearsiders as clear winners.
This is the club’s second major team win in three weeks, following on from their success in the Sunderland 10k.
The Powerade Super Series competition is for members of running clubs staged within the Bupa Great Run series of events. The prize for the winning teams is running equipment to the value of £1,000
The Sunderland team was Steven Duffy, Rob Sloan, Steve Graham, Michelle Holt, Kathryn Watt and Susan Clughen.
The team did not include Sunderland veteran Paul Redman, who has been missed off the team results. He is down without a club. The 45-year-old finished as the club’s second counter behind Steven Duffy (12th 34.58), in 16th in 35.33. Sunderland were so far ahead of the opposition that even if their sixth counter, Alan Hodgson, who clocked 38.48, had been a team scorer they would still have won.
The Strollers team, who finished fourth, was: Kevin Blyth, Tim Allsop, Colin Armour, Alyson West, Lyne Valentine, and Lesley Watson.
Result: 1 Sunderland Harriers 4.09.36, 2 North Shields Polytechnic 4.13.06, 3 Gateshead 4.14.27, 4 Sunderland Strollers 4.17.16, 5 Low Fell 4.19.10, 6 Morpeth 4.37.28, 7 Wallsend 4.09.36, 8 Quakers 5.06.28.
H Patrick Martin believes he can go a lot faster over the 3000m distance than his recent performance suggests.
The Sunderland Harrier, who competes in the World Trials 5000m at Birmingham on Sunday, clocked 8.20.58 at Trafford on Saturday.
He said: “I committed myself and was lapping at 8.10 pace for 5-6 laps. I was still on for a PB with a lap to go and then my legs went. I think I ran a better race than the time shows. I’m certain I will click in to that final part of the race soon.’’
H Sunderland veterans’ have a chance to add to their winning portfolio in a new event at Whitley Bay on Wednesday, August 10. The Wearsiders, by far the most successful veterans team in the North East for well over a decade, could target the over-45 event.
