Sunderland Harriers eye up top prize at Festival of Running

SUNDERLAND Harriers have selected their team for Sunday’s Festival of Running 10k and Half Marathon from the Stadium of Light.

The club is chasing a £500 first prize for having the best team performance from the 10k and half marathon.

To qualify, clubs must have a minimum of three competitors in each event and at least one of those three must be female.

The team with the lowest cumulative time from their best three performances in the 10K and Half Marathon, will be crowned Sunderland City Club Challenge winners.

The Sunderland 10k team will be headed by Craig Isherwood, the winner (34.34) of the Blackpool 10k on Sunday. Steve Rankin, Steve McMahon, Ian Dixon and possibly Nathan Reed, could join him in the line-up.

The women will include Michelle Avery and 16-year-old Jessica Fox.

The Half Marathon will see the team being headed by Kevin Jeffress and Andy Powell. Judith Thirlwell is hoping to compete after competing in Sunday’s London Marathon.

Sunderland Strollers will be defending the team title and their team should include their international marathon runner Alyson Dixon.

The 10k starts at 10am and the Half Marathon at 10.25.

There are also events going on in Mowbray Park on Saturday ahead of the 10k and Half Marathon. There will be 1k and 2k runs for children.

H Sunderland Harrier Michael Wilson shattered his personal best when winning the British Milers’ grand prix 1500m A race in Birmingham.

The 19-year-old went under four minutes for the first time when he recorded 3.56.15 to improve on his previous fastest of 4.01.96.

The Birmingham University student, who had been training at altitude for three weeks at Fort Romeu in the South of France, has now qualified for the British Students Championships at Bedford at the weekend.

Also at Bedford will be his clubmate Sparrow Morley, who goes over the same distance.

H Two Sunderland Strollers have been on ultra marathon duty, with Ashleigh Bennett and Jon Davies putting in sterling performances in their respective events.

Bennett finished third and third woman in the Kielder 80K Ultra Marathon.

Jon Davies, 45, posted a time of nine hours and 18 minutes to finish in 64th place in the HOKA Highland Fling Ultra Marathon, a gruelling 53 mile trail race.

It takes place along the lower section of the West Highland Way footpath. It starts in Milngavie, on the outskirts of Glasgow, finishing in Tyndrum.

This year’s race, which included 2300 metres of ascent, attracted around 1000 runners.

H Houghton Harriers had three youngsters on representative duty at the weekend.

Savannah Lloyd was in the Tyne and Wear team for the UK Sportshall final at Sportcity in Manchester and Eva Hardie and Henry Johnson competed for the North East team in the Virgin London Mini Marathon.

H Tonight sees the first North East Grand Prix of the season at Monkton, which also includes the North Eastern 10,000m championship at 6.20pm.

The meeting starts at 7pm. Highlights should be the 100m and 1500m races.
