Sunderland Harrier Paul Blakey beat a field of more than 1,000 to win the Gateshead Trail 10k at Blaydon on Saturday.

The 40-year-old veteran clocked 35min 44sec to win by nearly one minute at Derwent Walk Country Park.

Sunderland Harriers also had Alan McManus (46.56) and Duncan Mitchell (46.53) competing.

Sunderland Strollers had Chris Tynemouth in 59th (42.06) and Stephen Allen was 83rd (43.55), while Houghton Harrier Shaun McGrath was 131st (45.42).

Morpeth’s Vicky Gibbs won the women’s race (40.13), with Vicky Cotton (47.59), Maria Davis (49.08) and April Jones (50.11) competing for Sunderland Harriers.

Five Sunderland Harriers were well up the field in the Tyne Bridge Harriers 5k at Exhibition Park in Newcastle yesterday.

They were headed by Steve Rankin in eighth (15.54), then came veteran Michael Thompson in 15th (16.40), Ian Dixon was 17th (16.45), Steve McMahon 18th (16.51) and Steve Potts finished 25th (17.23).

Husband and wife, Elswick’s Tadele Geremew (14.57) and Justina Heslop (16.37), triumphed in their respective events. Morpeth veteran Ian Hudspith (15.03) was second and Gateshead’s Jed Marshall was third (15.29). Washington’s Kevin Calvert (Morpeth) finished seventh (15.51).

Sunderland Harrier Andy Powell won the Riverside parkrun in Chester-le-Street (16.19) and clubmate Michael Barker won the Sunderland parkrun at Silksworth (17.45).

Houghton Harrier Henry Johnson, the North East champion, won the bronze medal in the Northern Championships under-13 800m, clocking 2.19.54 at Middlesbrough.
