Scott Overall finalised his preparations for the Olympic marathon with a comfortable victory in the Great North Gateshead 10k yesterday, writes Kevin Carr.
He was only one of two runners to dip below the 30-minute barrier, clocking 29min 34sec for the distance to finish 25 seconds ahead of Wallsend Harrier Yared Hagos (29.59).
Jussi Urriainen was third (30.25) and then came Morpeth veteran Ian Hudspeth in fourth (31.25). Young Durham City Harrier Michael Crawley finished fifth (31.50) and last Wednesday’s Sunderland 5k winner Lewis Timmins (Morpeth) was sixth (32.15).
The women’s race was won by Gemma Steel in seventh (32.56), finishing ahead of Japan’s a Akito Matsuyama (33.07). Leigh’s Lauren Howarth was third, just two seconds further back (33.09). Sunderland Harrier Michelle Holt was sixth woman in 39.05.
Sunderland Harriers were led home by 17-year-old Patrick Crombie in 25th (36.46) and then came over-55 John Watson in 92nd (40.11), Keith Lewis recorded (42.45), Rachel Moore (44.17), Vince Emmett (46.05), Kathryn Watt (49.29) and over-55 Susan Clughen (53.12).
Kevin O’Neil in 84th was the first Sunderland Stroller to finish in 39.55 and he was followed by John Tinn (46,53) and Gillian Ritchie (48.58).
