THE problem of Sunderland Schools, in failing to finish any teams in the Durham County Schools Cross Country Championships, is being addressed by Sunderland Harriers and the Wearside Athletics Network.
Both organisations were quick to react to Monday’s Echo article over the concerns of lack of participation in athletics in the schools.
Sunderland Harriers secretary Michael Hill said: “There has been concern for years that the sport in schools has been on a downward spiral.
“It really concerns us as we are not getting the numbers joining the Harriers like we used to.
“I was there at Meadowfield on Saturday and was disappointed with the turnout from Sunderland.
“We want to get involved with the schools and offer them any help they need to get youngsters into the sport. There is a wealth of talent out there and we need to discover them.’’
Dave Savage of Wearside Athletics Network said: “The article concerned me and I will be bringing it to the attention of next week’s meeting.’’
