Stagecoach bus driver Michael Heskett finished in the frame for the first time in any race at Stanley yesterday.

Competing in the Derwentside AC’s Hell Hole multi terrain event, the Sunderland Harrier finished third (41min 24sec) after wearing the wrong shoes.

The Pallion man said: “I was slipping going through the muddy wooded section. I was wearing flat-soled shoes instead of ones with some grip on. I slipped back to eighth from second and I fought my way back only to fall and be passed just before the finish.’’

Gary Wallace of Blackhill Bounders was the winner (37.14). Houghton Harrier Rory Graham was 11th (42.40) and Alan Foster of Washington RC finished 15th (43.28).

The women’s winner was Myra Jones of Valley Striders in 43.33.
