James claims victory on US debut

SUNDERLAND Harrier Oliver James, in New Orleans on an athletic scholarship, made his indoor debut in the States and won the one mile race.

Competing for Louisiana University, in an inter-university competition, he clocked 4min 25sec to win by two seconds. The 19-year-old, the North East 1500m junior champion, next competes over 800m in Lake Charles in Arkansas next week.

H Durham City Harrier Dan Jenkin finished third (1.11.01) in the Brass Monkey half marathon in York yesterday. The race was won by Holmfirth Harrier Matthew Peirson in 1.10.19. Barnsley’s Jilly Woodthorpe won the women’s race in 19th position overall (1.15.58).

Sunderland Strollers had Andy Duke in 317th (1.31.48) and Anthony Tiernan 621st (1.41.46).

Rachal Ball clocked 1.34.58.

H Former Durham City Harrier Michael Crawley won the Carlisle Resolution Run 10k yesterday in 31.18.

Sunderland Harrier Steven Duffy was eighth (34.06) and Paul Collins, building up to the London Marathon, was 18th (36.23) and second over-50.

H The Sunderland parkrun had a record number of runners competing at Silksworth Sports Complex on Saturday.

A total of 210 finished the run, won by Durham City Harrier Jonathan Wilkinson (16.42). The 18-year-old became the 14th man to beat 17 minutes.

Sunderland Harrier Michelle Avery was first woman in ninth overall (19.37).

Stroller Paul Roper achieved the best age graded performance in fourth place (18.29). Competing in the 55-59 age category, he gained a standard of 83.86 per cent.
