Houghton Harriers are celebrating their best ever North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championship in winning one individual gold and one individual silver medal, plus two team silvers in the younger age group events.

North East under-13 800m champions Henry Johnson used his speed to win the under-13 cross country title with a superb race.

He beat his great rival, Gateshead Harrier Ethan McGlen, by 60 metres to lead his club to silver medals in the team competition. He was backed by Will Bellamy in fifth and Matthew Lumb in 36th. Sunderland Harrier Connor Prior was 11th.

Nicole Phillips had only the very talented Morpeth runner Holly Peck ahead of her in the under-13 girls’ race to take the silver medal. With support from Amy Leonard, in 19th, and Lydia James, 23rd, silver medals were again the order of the day for the Houghton team.

Houghton’s under-15 boys’ team ended fourth, with Jamie Reed in eighth, Matthew Phillips 11th and Joe Whelan 48th.

The under-17s were fifth, with Alex Brown seventh.

Sunderland Harriers under-15 girls were fifth team, with Sarah Knight in 13th, Eve Quinn 14th and Grace Mackie 30th.
