Houghton Harrier Henry Johnson smashed the 2012 championship record in the boys’ under-13 1500m with a dazzling performance.

He clocked 4min 42.60sec to better the 4.45.37 set by Josh Allen of Middlesbrough Mandale. He totally dominated the race to win by over three seconds.

His coach Lyn Cooper, a double Commonwealth marathon representative for Scotland remarked: “That’s faster than I ever ran.”

There were also medals for Houghton on Saturday, from Phillipa Ellis in the under-13 girls’ 70m hurdles with first place (12.21) and clubmate Ellie Patterson in second (12.65). Anna Pigford won the under-13 girls’ long jump (4.07) and Michelle Hahn won the under-20 discus (19.18).

Sunderland’s Sophie Burnett (Birtley) won the under-20 800m in 2.21.24 and yesterday she achieved the double with her win in the 1500m (4.46.14).

In what was Houghton Harriers’ best ever championship for years, more medals came the way of the club yesterday. On the track, under-15 Jamie Reed was second in the 800m (2.08.76) and Rachel Scott third in the under-20 400m hurdles (74.21).

In the under-13 girls shot, talented all-rounder Phillipa Ellis won (6.50) and was second in the high jump (1.20) and Ellie Patterson was third (1.15). In the under-20 triple jump, Georgie Oliver triumphed over her clubmate Michella Hahn and Grace Oliver was second under-17.
