Hood steps up fitness with victory

SUNDERLAND Harrier Mark Hood chose the newly-created Riverside parkrun for a further test of his fitness at Chester-le-Street on Saturday, writes Kevin Carr.

After finishing fifth in the Sunderland 5k in 15.30 earlier this month, he duly won at Chester-le-Street in 15.43, exactly one minute outside the course record set by Yared Hagos (Wallsend) at the first Riverside parkrun three weeks ago.

The 30-year-old Hood, who has won the Sunderland 5k three times and has a best for the distance of 14.39, is aiming to be at peak fitness for the North East Cross Country Championship at Hartlepool on December 8.

Steve Potts won the Sunderland parkrun at Silksworth (17.18) from his Sunderland Harriers’ clubmate Tim Field (17.29).

In the Newcastle City Council 5k at Exhibition Park, Morpeth’s Nick Swinburn won the race in 14.55 from clubmate Matt Nicholson (15.25).

Sunderland Harriers’ had Craig Isherwood in eighth (16.48), Michael Barker 11th (16.56) and veteran Alan Hodgson 20th (17.56). John Watson was first over-55 in 19.17. Sunderland Stroller Marc Richardson was 54th (20.45).

Morpeth Harrier Sarah Wilkinson won the women’s race in 18th (17.47).

Sunderland Harrier under-20 Oliver James ran his fastest 1500m of 3.59.26 when finishing fourth in the B race at the BMC Gold standard event at Stretford.

H James Bulman, of New Marske Harriers, won yesterday’s Saltburn Phoenix 10k in 33.36. He was followed by Sunderland Harrier Craig Isherwood (35.54) and Sundertland Stroller Tim Allsop (36.33).
