Harriers veterans claim relay gold

SUNDERLAND Harriers scooped gold and bronze medals in the North East Masters’ Road Relay Championships at Bedewell Park, Jarrow.

The club’s over-65 team defeated Claremont and South Shields to win the three-stage relay.

The triumphant trio was Jim Wightman (14min 02sec), Billy Bittlestone (14.10) and Dave White (13.56).

The Wearsiders over-45 team finished third in their event (32.36), behind North Shields (30.49) and Morpeth (31.46).

The team featured Brian Bewick (10.31), Paul Merrison (10.57) and Tim Field (11.08).

Sunderland Harrier Craig Isherwood finished fourth in the Les Alcorn 10k at Alnwick.

He clocked 34.30 in the race won by Morpeth’s Carl Taylor in 33 minutes exactly.

Sparrow Morley retained his Tyne Bridge Harriers’ Golden Mile title at Whitley Bay on Saturday.

The Sunderland Harrier clocked 4mins 23.7secs after a 58 seconds last lap.

In cold, damp and windy conditions, Morley kicked away from the leading group of four with 450m remaining.

The runner-up was Kurt Heron (Tyne Bridge) 4:26.3 and third was James Dunce (Tyne Bridge) 4.30.6.

Nathan Reed made his season’s track debut, representing his second claim club, Sheffield, in the 1500m B race in the British Athletics Premiership match at Sheffield.

The Sunderland Harrier finished second, recording 3.58.25 behind Josh Trigwell of Newham and Essex Beagles (3.55.76).
