ST AIDAN’S student Michael Wilson made it through to next month’s English Schools’ Championships at Birmingham after winning the senior boys’ 800m in the Durham Schools’ Championships at Monkton.
After being in second place at the bell in 62 seconds, the 18-year-old unleashed an impressive 54-second last lap to win in 1min 55.9sec.
Other Sunderland athletes to make it through to the Inter-Counties match at Gateshead on Saturday included Sophie Burnett, with a win in the intermediates’ 3000m (10.18.0), plus Jessica Fox in second place (11.27.9).
Mark Smith was second in the inter boys’ 1500m (4.23), Sean Mackie filled the same position in the junior boys’ 800m (2.13.0), Ben Craig was runner-up in the seniors’ 400m (54.4) and Natalia Powoski won the senior discus and was second in the javelin.
Houghton Harrier Ben Mitchell won the inters’ shot with a heave of 13.29m.
