KENYAN Boniface Kiprop beat a field of 4,000 to win the £1,000 first prize in the Blaydon Race yesterday.
The 23-year-old clocked 26.26 to beat Ethiopian Tewedros Shiferaw, the 2007 winner, by 12 seconds, with Wallsend’s Ethiopian star Yared Hagos third (27.12).
Morpeth’s 42-year-old veteran Ian Hudspith finshed s superb fourth in 27.22, with Leeds athlete Alan Buckley fifth (27.23).
Durham City athlete Dan Garbutt was the first Wearsider in tenth (28.02) followed by his clubmate Michael Crawley in 13th (28.36).
First Sunderland Harrier to finish was Kevin Calvert in 30th (30.37), Paul Redman was 73rd (32.59) and Steven Gordon 129th (35.03). Sunderland Stroller Tim Allsop was 90th (33.54)
Kenya pair Perandis Lekepana 23rd overall (29.55) and Emmily Biwott 32nd (30.51) were first and second in the women’s race. Kendal’s Rebecca Robinson was third (31.04). Birtley 16-year-old Lydia Turner ran out of her skin to place fourth in 56th (32.13). Sunderland Harrier Michelle Avery was 144th (35.19).
