Athletics: Patrick Martin close to best time

PATRICK MARTIN was just outside his best time when clocking 8.20.58 in the 3000m at the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix at Trafford, Manchester, on Saturday.

The race winner was Leeds athlete James Wilkinson in 7.56.89, Morpeth’s Jon Taylor was third (7.58.83). Martin finished 17th.

Phil Hurst (Elswick) won the B 1500m in 3.43.35 and Andy Wiles (New Marske) was second (3.44.71). Gateshead Harrier Stacey Smith was second in the women’s 800m (2.03.29) and Tynedale’s Andrew Richardson recorded 1.49.08 in the 800m.

He clocked 18.18 to maintain his 100 per cent record in the race, three wins in three appearances.

Chris Clarke (Glasgow University) was second in 18:30 and Sunderland Stroller Niall McArdle was third in 18:53.

Keri Pearson of Elvet Striders won the women’s race in17th overall (20:59), Fiona Shenton also of Elvet Striders was second in 21:07 and Alison Bone (South Shields) was third (24:12).

The women’s overall standings are: Michelle Mustard (Unatt) 3558 pts, Jane Niven (Unatt) 2850, Greta Jones (Elvet) 2287.
