Athletics: Houghton Harriers youngsters impress in Cardiff

Three promising young Houghton Harriers made the long journey to Cardiff for the first of the British Athletics Cross Challenge series on Saturday.

And the trio equipped themselves well with noteworthy performances in their events.

Alex Brown, who surprised many by clocking the fastest time in the senior men’s race in the North East Harrier League at Wrekenton last month, finished seventh (19.00) in the Under-20 men’s race.

Durham’s Cameron Allan was 17th (20min 42sec) in the race won by Jake Hayward (Cardiff) (18.04).

In the Under-15 Boys’ race, Houghton’s Henry Johnson finished seventh (9.39) and Will Bellamy 11th (9.44), with Leeds athlete Ethan Hussey taking the title (9.14).

World University Games medallist Jess Judd and Loughborough-based Sam Stabler were victorious in the senior races.

Houghton’s Joseph McGinley followed on from his second place in the Under-11s race. in the North East Harrier League at Druridge Bay last Sunday, to win the Year 5 race for Minnows in Jarrow and Hebburn AC’s Minors Cross Country at Bedeswell Park on Saturday.
