A serial booze thief has been jailed after stealing more than £1,000 of alcohol over a two-month period.

David William Wilson targeted High Street names such as M&S, Asda and Morrisons during seven thefts committed across the North East between August 14 and October 14 of last year.

Wilson, who turns 42 on March 6, of Perth Road, Plains Farm, Sunderland, struck at stores in Sunderland, Seaham, Gateshead and Bishop Auckland.

He admitted all seven counts as well as six other charges when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

The other offences included three assaults, which were committed between July 24 and October 24, and one attempted theft on October 5.

Magistrates jailed him for 34 weeks in total after deciding the offences were “so serious” because they were committed within a short period of time and because he had failed to respond to non-custodial penalties.

Wilson must also pay £909 compensation at a rate of £5 per week from June 1.
