Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Seaham's team and both Sunderland RNLI boats were called out to help the police after a report was made of a despondent woman on the cliffs at Ryhope

A spokesman for the Sunderland team said: " As our officers arrived on scene, some went to the best vantage point to be able to offer eyes on the casualty, whilst others waited for the teams vehicle to arrive in order to take the correct equipment to the beach should the casualty have fallen.

"After negotiations with the police the person was brought to safety and into their care."

A spokesman for Sunderland RNLI added: "Both inshore lifeboats launched to support the Atlantic 85 which had diverted from a training exercise to respond to reports of a distressed female on the cliffs near Ryhope.

"Thankfully after about 30 minutes police were able to talk the female into walking away from the edge to safety."

The call out happened at 5.30pm yesterday.

The Coastguard has issued a reminder people should call 999 and ask for its service in all coastal emergencies.
