To mark International Coffee Day, we've trawled TripAdvisor to see which are the most popular cafes in Sunderland according to reviewers.

Did your favourite make the list?

1) The Mad Hatter, Sea Road, Fulwell

"Love is all around when it comes to this gem of a cafe" were the words of one reviewer for this canny cafe, whose Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-inspired name is a nod to writer Lewis Carroll's links to Sunderland.

The cafe serves highly applauded breakfasts and lunches as well as a full range of coffees with all the classics.

2) The Good Apple Cafe, Derwent Street, Sunderland city centre

Sunderland's first vegetarian cafe, catering for veggies, vegans, people on gluten-free diets - and everyone else.

It's meat-free menu is equally popular with non-veggies, and there's a full range of coffees, teas and more speciality options such as matcha lattes and Kokoa single origin hot chocolate.

3) Serendipity Tea & Trinkets, Frederick Street, Sunderland city centre

Fans describe Serendipity as having a "gorgeous setting" with "exceptional" food and service.

Expect all the charm and kitsch of a vintage English tea room, complete with ornate cups, bunting and traditional cake stands rich with sweet bounty.

4) Penshaw Tea Rooms, Chester Road

As far as settings go, you can't get much better in Sunderland, sat next to Penshaw Hill and overlooking Herrington Country Park.

It's location makes it a great place to refresh yourself after an explore of some of the city's best countryside.

5) The Scullery, Pier Point, Marine Walk, Roker

"Would visit again whether sunshine or rain" were the words of one reviewer who was particularly enamoured with the cafe's coffee and sandwiches.

One of many popular spots for a coffee and bite to eat on Sunderland's amazing seafront.

6) The Salt House Kitchen, Queens Parade, Roker

Reviewers said this wasn't the cheapest place to stop off, but the price tag was reflected in the quality - or as someone put it: "the food is top-notch, the service is top-notch, and the view is absolutely the best".

7) Holmeside Coffee, inside Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens

Now in its new home, this popular Sunderland company has the amazing surroundings of the lush, tropical plant life of the Winter Gardens and neighbouring Mowbray Park to add to its quality coffee and food.

8) Fausto Coffee, Marine Walk, Roker

The hippest coffee joint in town and part of the vibrant scene which has developed at Sunderland's seafront in recent years.

Top quality coffee, ice cream, light bites, vegan options and a prime location make this a great spot for everyone - with cyclists, dog walkers and sea swimmers receiving a particularly warm welcome.

9) Cole Cafe & Deli, Side Cottage, St George's Terrace, Roker

One reviewer hailed Cole as having "the best milky coffee this side of London" and its quality beverages and food are a hit with concerning customers.

10) Doggie Diner, Sea Road, Sunderland

The friendliest of dog-friendly cafes, with a dedicated menu for canine customers.

We loved this review, which pretty much sums the place up: "Had our pugs first birthday party here and he was totally spoiled.

"He got afternoon doggie tea which he loved along with a party hat. Human food is lovely too and we are always made to feel welcome."
