Police are hunting vandals after at least 15 cars have tyres slashed in a Sunderland street.

The damage was discovered in an area around Azalea Terrace in the early hours of this morning.

A resident in the area said: "Several cars were attacked last night in Azalea Terrace North and South - tyres slashed.

"It was after 1.30am as that's when I got home.

"Police knocked on my door at about 9.30am."

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Police are carrying out enquiries after tyres were slashed on a number of vehicles in and around Azalea Terrace, in Sunderland City Centre.

"Enquiries are very much in the early stages, however, so far it is believed that around 15 cars have been damaged.

"Any witnesses are asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101, quoting reference 180 of 29/09/16, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
