Householders have been urged to ensure they bring in their wheelie bins after five were found on fire in the space of a few hours.

Firefighters from Sunderland Central were first called out at 10.50pm to Olive Street in Sunderland city centre after a bin was found alight there.

They went on to answer reports in Mary Street, a short distance away, Derby Street, off Burn Park Road, Rosslyn Terrace, near The Chesters, and finally St Mark's Road, also in Millfield.

In each instance, the crew used a hose reel to put out the fires.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has asked people to make sure they take in their bins from back lanes at night to prevent them from being set alight.
