A man has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling from the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.
At around 4.10am today, police received a report of a man on the wrong side of the railings at the bridge.
Emergency services attended the incident and officers began to engage with the man to try and bring him back to safety.
However, at around 4.45am the man fell from the railings into the water where he sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
The coastguard were able to assist in reaching the man and he was taken to hospital by paramedics where his condition is described as critical.
