This amazing picture of Sunderland from the air captures work progressing on the new Wear Crossing.

The image was taken by Robert Hunter from Houghton on one of his trips capturing the North East from the air.

Twice the height of Nelson's Column, and bigger than Big Ben, Sunderland's new bridge will be hard to miss when it opens in spring 2018.

The new crossing will be a three span cable-stayed bridge rising to 105m (344ft) crossing the River Wear between Castletown on the north to Pallion on the south bank.

The new bridge will have two lanes of traffic in each direction, as well as dedicated cycleways and footpaths.
