Police have quelled social media fears that a travellers’ site could be set up in Easington Village.
People had said on social media that police were on site at Easington Village Green today where travellers had arrived.
However, police have said that people have simply arrived by horse and trap to attend a Christening at a local pub, and that there are no plans for anyone to set up a site or stay overnight.
Peterlee Inspector Steve Thubron said: “There’s a Christening at a local pub and lots of people have turned up. Some are on horse and traps but they’re all people from the Durham area.
“Police were there just to make sure there was no disorder. It’s not a travellers’ event, no one is staying overnight.”
