Families woken by mysterious early-morning 'bang'

Mystery surrounds a loud bang which woke shocked residents in an East Durham community today.

People in Seaham and Dawdon were woken by a "crashing bang" which appeared to be coming from the dock just before 6am today (August 31).

Dozens are talking about the incident on social media - but there is little information to explain what has caused it.

Seaham Harbour has no record of any incident which could have caused such a loud noise.

Emergency services also told the Echo they have no reports of a loud, exploding-like sound in the area.
