Petrol station applies for 24-hour alcohol licence

A petrol station has applied for a 24-hour booze licence.

Burnmoor Filling Station, in Chester Road, Houghton, has asked Durham County Council to remove limits on its sale of alcohol.

If approved, it would mean customers could buy drink from the store at any time – but between 10pm – 6am they would have to make their purchases through a dedicated night hatch, rather than being allowed into the shop itself.

The application said: “We would like to extend our existing licensing hours for the retail of alcohol to 24 hours.”

Conditions attached to the application would also include measures such as CCTV, a ‘Challenge 25’ policy and not to sell alcohol to anyone already thought to be drunk.

Buyers would also be banned from drinking on the premises.

The business is currently licensed to sell alcohol between 8am – midnight on Sundays and 8am – 1am the rest of the week.

Any objections should be submitted to Durham County Council by Tuesday, October 23.
