Police appeal after cyclist is seriously hurt in Durham collision

A cyclist was seriously hurt when in a collision with a van on the outskirts of Durham early today.

The accident happened at 2.55am on the northbound carriageway of the A167, around 200m north of the Sniperley park and ride roundabout as both vehicles were travelling north.

The cyclist, a man aged 63 from Ushaw Moor, was not initially believed to be seriously injured and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

However, his condition deteriorated a few hours later and he was transferred to the Freeman Hospital for surgery.

The driver of the van, a man aged 46 from Brandon was unhurt.
