Why we need devolution in the North

The appeal for increased devolution in 'How the North of England has been hit by public spending cuts' (December 5) is an essential development towards a, more interconnected, modern form of governance that the North of England desperate needs.

Division between London and the North continues to increase despite the introduction of a “northern powerhouse”, meaning trust of the national government is at an all-time low.

London has had a devolved Assembly since 2000 which has been a great success for the city.

It delivers much more effective and transparent governance, based specifically for the peculiarities of the area.

It is about time that regions, such as Tyne and Wear, gain similar substantial powers through devolution in order to directly address uneven development instead of relying on what I consider to be incompetence of those at Westminster.
