Free parking would attract motorists in Sunderland

I welcome John Tumman's letter about parking in the city (Echo, September 20).

We do need to attract more people into our city centre.

Parking charges and the state of some of our car parks are a deterrent.

A simpler, more attractive, parking policy, eg keeping Thursdays “free after 3pm” and allowing a free first hour, a maximum daily charge, free parking on bank holidays, Sundays and after 5pm on other nights would attract more visitors, be good for business and probably increase overall revenue for the council from parking charges.

Then we could invest more in our car parks, especially at the Civic Centre, and attract even more motorists into our city centre.

It’s not rocket science!
