After reading the recent articles on Breast Cancer Care in Sunderland, I am confused and concerned.
I understand Sunderland Royal Hospital has Centre of Excellence Status so am at a loss as to why all Breast Cancer Patients are now referred to the QE at Gateshead, excellent though it is.
Apparently the surgeon/consultant at Sunderland Royal Hospital was suspended in April but surely arrangements could have been made for a surgeon from Gateshead or Newcastle Hospital to attend Sunderland for one or two days a week, thus enabling surgery and follow up treatment to continue there.
I have used the services of the Breast Care Unit myself in the past (not for cancer) but treatment I received, follow up appointments and support received at Sunderland Royal Hospital was absolutely fantastic. The fact that I was able to be treated locally with such care and professionalism at a worrying time was of great comfort.
How long does the Clinical Commissioning Group think it will take to re-establish the Breast Care Unit at Sunderland?
