Charlie Hurley was born on Sunday, October 4 1936 in Cork, Ireland and he is celebrating his 80th birthday.

He joined Sunderland from Millwall in 1957 and stayed on for 12 years with the club and he appeared 400 times and scored 26 goals until June 1969 when he transferred to Bolton Wanderers. When he retired from the game Sunderland supporters voted Charlie the Player of the Century since 1979. Charlie got on with the Sunderland football stars from the sixties including Colin Suggett, Brian Clough, Jimmy Montgomery, Cecil Irwin, Len Ashurst, Colin Nelson, Calvin Palmer, George Herd, Nicky Sharkey, etc.
