Your cracking memories of working at Pyrex in Sunderland

We’re talking about the Pyrex works in Sunderland and asked for your memories of it when we shared a retro photograph on social media.

More than 22,000 of you took a look including dozens of people who used to work there.

It was in 2007 that production came to an end but the factory’s days were numbered when news broke months earlier that the neighbouring Corning plant was to close. The two factories were originally part of Sunderland Glass Works and were split in 1994 when Corning sold the domestic glassware side of the business to Newell Rubbermaid, which sold it on to Arc in October 2005.

We got some lovely comments from former workers including Yvonne Gray who said: “I worked there, on a packing line just like this one – early 70s – tea sets and casserole dishes. Some cracking, hard working people worked here!!”

George Gibson said: “Some great laughs as well especially when the girls were on decorating side and packing.”

Denise Ball said: “Worked there 11 years until it closed in 2007. Great people – would go back tomorrow. Really sad time when people started leaving, some had been there over 40 years.”

Sharman Carroll told us: “My mam and dad worked there for years ... Edward Cunningham and Margaret Cunningham... still got a ashtray which was made with the Tally Ho design x.”

Thanks also to Brenda Doran who said: “Worked in the Purchasing department started straight from school in 1969. Loved it. Was James A Jobling then.”
