The Sunderland Carers’ Centre is thrilled that its Rainbows and Rollercoasters Project for young carers is one of five projects in the region shortlisted in ITV’s The People’s Projects Competition with the chance of winning up to £50,000 of Big Lottery Fund cash.

People can vote online until March 13.

Former SAFC players, including Jim Montgomery, Dick Malone, Jimmy Shoulder and Gary Bennett, have already given their backing to the young people and others across the city are being asked to do the same.

Young carers are children and young people who help to look after someone in the family because they are disabled, have a long-term physical or mental illness or a drug or alcohol problem.

Graham Burt, chief executive of Sunderland Carers’ Centre, said: “Being a young carer can have a massive impact on a child or young person’s life.

“This funding would enable us to provide activities and courses which would really make a huge difference to their lives.

“To win, we need as many votes as possible.

“We are calling on the people of Sunderland to make us their “People’s Project” and vote for us over the next two weeks.”
