A SIX-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl has a spring in her step after winning a competition to design shoes.

Abigail Burns, from Elba Park, Houghton, designed a pair of canvas shoes with a rainbow unicorn for footwear brand Start-rite Shoes.

Her efforts won her one of five runners-up spots across the country and a £100 prize for her school, Barnes Infant School.

Start-rite Shoes ran the competition in partnership with charity Living Streets, which encourages more children to walk to school through its Walk once a Week (WoW) scheme.

Abigail said: “I was really excited when I found out I had won the competition. I chose the unicorn design because I love unicorns and liked the idea of having a picture of one on my shoes.”

Barnes Infant School headteacher Julia Belshaw, added: “As a school we are very proud of Abigail’s achievement in a national competition. Abigail will work with the school council to decide what resources we will spend the £100 on.”
