A revamped YMCA is opening today to offer help to a village’s young people.

Fence Houses YMCA Youth and Community Project, in Front Street, Colliery Row, has undergone a major refurbishment.

The new-look centre, working alongside Sunderland YMCA, will now provide more support and opportunities to give young people and adults the chance to develop their personal and social skills, contribute positively to their communities and make informed choices.

Project leader David McCreedy said: “We will be working in partnership with the voluntary sector and local communities to build capacity and enable them to provide opportunities for young people and adults of the area.

“We welcome all young people and adults, including those who are at risk or who have complex needs.”

Kath Hope, chief executive officer of Sunderland YMCA, said: “This is a fantastic new adventure for Sunderland YMCA and Fence Houses YMCA to be working together.

“Fence Houses is a fantastic community and is somewhere that would benefit from having a dedicated team of community and youth workers.”
