Woman's elbow fractured in Metro station attack - police issue CCTV of man they want to trace

Police want to speak to this man about an assault at a Metro station which left a woman in hospital for a week.

The attack took place at about 9.45am on Sunday, August 14, when a man approached the 64-year-old as she used the ticket machine at Central Station in Newcastle.He pushed her, causing her to fall to the ground, before running off. Police carried out a search of the station, but were unable to track down the attacker.

The victim then went to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she had an operation on a fractured elbow. She spent a week in hospital undergoing treatment for the injury, and police released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to about the incident. Today, investigating officer Pc Paul Williamson, of the Metro Unit, has made a renewed appeal for witnesses to help identify the attacker.He said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack that hospitalised a woman for a week and we are determined to catch the person responsible. "No form of violence is acceptable in this region, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure our transport networks are a safe environment. "We have released an image of a man we're particularly keen to speak to, and we'd urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch so we can move our investigation forward. "He was in the area of the attack when it took place and we need to track him down. If you know who he is then get in touch." Any witnesses to the attack, or anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV image, is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
